SEMA Spotlight: 1970 Nissan Skyline
Jan 6th 2025
FOR THE LONGEST TIME, I WANTED TO BUILD A CAR THAT ALREADY HAD CHARACTER. I'VE BEEN THROUGH FIVE SKYLINES ALREADY, BUT THEY WERE TOO CLEAN FOR ME TO CUT INTO THEM. WHEN I FOUND THIS ONE, I JUMPED RIGHT ON IT—I KNEW IT WAS THE ONE.
- NESTOR "SHINGO" MENDOZA, 1970 Nissan Skyline Owner
"I had the horns for three years before getting the car because I wanted to do something in that style. Everything came together perfectly with it. All I had to do was add flares, cut the car, make it fit, and make it work. I'm really happy with the outcome."
I'm really proud that my drawings are on the gauges. I feel strongly for Japanese art culture. The tach artwork represents perseverance and never giving up on anything.
The engine is stock GA Series 1500, with dual webers by my friend Kyusha House Taka, who drove four hours to help me get it running correctly.
"I'm afraid of spiders, and I need to get over it somehow. So, there's one in the shift knob, and it's not going to bite me—I'm safe."
I had to replace the steering pump at the last minute. We had an issue with the gearbox—it broke down, and I couldn't find parts for it. I ended up modifying the R30 Skyline gearbox, including the pump and everything else. I had to give up my A/C to drive it properly, but it's great. I don't care anyways.
